I am an Army veteran. I served at Ft. Greely Alaska from 1992-1994. I came of age at Ft. Greely. Just turned nineteen when I arrived there, my first duty station.

I have so many wonderful memories of the people I served with and the Alaska wilds I explored. Albums with treasured photographs, pictures I know other people -who were as charmed by Ft. Greely as I- would likely enjoy. This blog is where I would like to share those photographs and other experiences and details of Ft. Greely with you all. If you see yourself in any of them, please reach out, I’d love to reconnect.
Ft. Greely was small while I was there, perhaps five hundred or so soldiers and family on base. We were all family. Some members I still recall, and miss. The memories of the place will keep me far warmer than the cold winds whipping across the airfield ever could.
Allen Army Airfield, Ft. Greely, is tucked in a picturesque Alaskan valley, next to the Tanana River. The nearest town is Delta Junction, about a five to ten minute drive north, depending on road conditions. Ft. Greely may have lacked a vibrant nightlife or anything open for 24 hours nearby, yet it made up for it in scenery, wilderness and outdoor activities. To a degree that no description, or photographs, no passionate short stories featuring Ft. Greely can even come close to doing the military outpost justice. It’s a stunningly memorable place. Hence, here I am, sharing my photographs and stories in an attempt to give people the essence of the impactful experience.
Please forgive the quality of the snapshots. My first camera, and it wasn’t a good one. Some photographs are taken from the disposable cameras, the kind from the 90’s that one would mail off to receive photographs back, weeks later. My photos may not win awards, but the place, the time and the people in the photos are the true quality.
